Itchy Scalp
There are many causes of an itchy scalp including stress, infection, sensitivity to naturally occurring yeasts on the scalp, and contact dermatitis. Constant scratching of the skin can cause more itching and our trichologist can advise on how to break the itch-scratch cycle.
An itchy scalp can be an early sign of a condition that may go on to cause permanent hair loss, so it is always important to get it checked out by a trichologist.

Pityriasis Symplex
Dandruff as it is widely known, is a common condition causing small, white flakes visible on the scalp and hair that may fall onto clothing. The scalp may be itchy and/or greasy, and the condition may be exacerbated by stress, diet and cold, dry weather. The condition can be managed by in-salon treatments and the regular use of anti-dandruff shampoo.

Folliculitis
Folliculitis is the inflammation of the hair follicle and can be caused by bacterial infection. It presents with inflamed papules and pustules and is often encountered on individuals with shaved hairstyles. It is common in black skin where it can produce keloid scaring.

Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrhoeic Dermatitis is a long-term, inflammatory condition which affects the areas of the skin with a high percentage of sebaceous (oil producing) glands. This includes the scalp, ears, eyebrows and the sides of the nose. The condition presents as yellow scales which may form a thick covering on the scalp. The scalp may be sore, itchy and red. It can be managed by in-clinic treatments and our trichologist can advise on the correct products to use at home.

Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an autoimmune inflammatory condition which causes increased skin turnover. This results in scaly plaques which can affect the scalp. There are doctor-prescribed medications for psoriasis but no cure. Our trichologist can help remove the plaques and ease the discomfort with a course of scalp treatments.
